Shotgun Stock Survival Kit

  By Orion

My new Maverick Model 88 Security 12 gauge came with a hollow synthetic stock, which I thought would be ideal for an emergency kit. I just can’t stand wasted space.

The pistol grip that also came with the gun has a cavity in it that I’m planning on using for an emergency fire starter kit. All I need to do is fashion some type of removable plug for it.

The main kit is contained in the stock.

These are the contents of the kit. There wasn’t enough room in the stock for the mylar space blanket and small first-aid kit so I removed the ALICE clip from a GI compass pouch and attached it to the shotgun’s sling.

Contents

1.         15 feet of 550 parachute cord.

2.         Mylar space blanket.

3.         10 feet of brass snare wire.

4.         Matches in a waterproof aluminum antacid case.

5.         Nylon mesh bag to keep the contents in.

6.         Swedish Firesteel and striker.

7.         P38 Can-opener

8.         40 feet 25lb. test braided fishing line.

9.         EZ Lap diamond sharpener.

10.      Small Buck lock-back folding knife.

11.      Fishing kit containing assorted hooks, sinkers, swivels, flies, ice jigs and Berkley Powerbait grubs.

12.      Plastic pill container for the fishing kit.

13.      First-aid kit containing bandages, iodine, burn gel, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment and a sewing needle.

14.      Shotgun recoil pad.

Stock filled with the kit contents.

Compass pouch containing the first-aid kit and space blanket, along with a Phillips screwdriver bit for removing the recoil pad.

I’d originally intended to use strike anywhere matches as shown in the picture but I thought there might be a chance of them igniting due to the recoil of the shotgun if they happened to rub together or impact the aluminum container too hard. Instead, I used waterproof safety matches, removed the striking surface from the box and glued it to the side of the container.

The mesh bag and the paracord keep the contents from rattling and moving around inside the stock.

I chose paracord rather than ordinary string because, essentially, with paracord you get several different strings in one if you take it apart. You can use it for shoelaces, cordage; the inner cords can be used as fishing line or thread for making repairs.

Spare ammo is carried in a nylon slide on the stock.

Compass pouch attached to the sling.
